While we were in Paris, we visited Deyrolle, an extraordinary taxidermy shop on Rue du Bac. The shop was founded in 1831 by a renowned entomologist, and grew to include a rare collection of stuffed and mounted animals, preserved butterflies and scientific equipment.
Then, in 2008, a fire swept through the shop, and nearly 90 percent its menagerie was destroyed. Photographer Laurent Bochet shot more than 300 images of the charred collection, and his devastatingly beautiful photos were later released in the book, 1000° C.
Deyrolle re-opened its doors in September 2009, and although its collection is smaller, it is still remarkable and worth a visit if you are in Paris.
