“I was an editor at InStyle Magazine for the past eight years focusing on celebrity and entertainment coverage. I worked in the Los Angeles office and while our bread and butter was booking celebrities for features, we really had our hands in all aspects of the magazine. I worked with brands and fashion houses on digital stories, event coverage, and new launches. As much as I loved it, I just recently left to realize one of my life-long dreams: writing my own novel. I'm still freelancing for publications and brands, but my main focus is writing my book. It’s such a huge change for me, but I’m really excited for this next chapter.
Working in the industry for so long has taught me the importance of brand integrity. What's important to me is where items are made, how they're made, the conditions in which they're made, and the materials used to make them. I try to shop brands that make things locally and sustainably. In my line of work, I’ve been lucky to learn about the people behind so many brands. I love having a connection to the things I wear. I actually recently toured the Citizens of Humanity factory for InStyle and was so amazed by the process of creating one pair of jeans. The amount of work and the attention to detail was incredible to see, and I love that everything is made in Los Angeles from start to finish.”
“In terms of a daily uniform, I almost always wear high-waisted denim and a tee. From there, I'll add a few things to mix it up, from colorful sandals to chunky sweaters. When I'm getting dressed, I always pick jeans first and then build an outfit around them depending on what I have to do that day. If I have meetings or an event to attend, I'll stick with darker wash denim, otherwise it's light-wash, vintage-y goodness for every other occasion. Even though I work from home now, I always get dressed for the day—it's important for my sanity!”
“I live on the Westside of Los Angeles. My dog, Hank, and I walk through the neighborhood everyday and our favorite place is a little Australian-run cafe called Bondi Harvest. This is such an L.A. thing to say but their turmeric latte is my favorite!”
“When I'm searching for the perfect pair of jeans, I look for a high waist, snug around the butt, and not too skinny in the leg. I definitely gravitate towards vintage-looking denim, too. Most importantly, they need to be comfortable and keep their shape.”
“I'm obsessed with the new Charlotte jeans. They're like a perfect pair of vintage denim that you've been searching for years, sifting through endless thrift shops and flea markets, until you land upon that one pair that was meant for you! I swear, they are that good. I've been wearing them nonstop.”
“Since I'm focused on writing my novel now, I've been trying to read one novel per week to get me in the right mindset. I loved Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. At the end of the day though, I always go back to my favorite author, Joan Didion. I reread her books all the time for inspiration. I love the way she writes about California, humanity, loss, and love. She writes so beautifully.”
